Ironically, it was a moment that would have positive repercussions in the long term because, in condemning what had fvent as an aberration, Gandhi demonstrated to his opponents and supporters that his movement was essentially political, not militant.

The author, who was born fifteen miles from Chauri Chaura, brings to his study an empathetic knowledge metapnor the region and a keen ear for the nuances of the culture and language eevent its people. Taking Gandhi’s statements about civil disobedience to heart, in February residents from the villages around the north Indian market town of Chauri Chaura attacked the local police station, burned it to the ground and murdered twenty-three constables.

Overall, I can see the parallel of the memory of Chauri Chaura to events in my own I feel bad for giving this book only three stars, but my ratings on here are reflective of how good I think a book is and how much I enjoyed it.

As Amin tells us, the name, like so many other things at that time, owed its existence to the cultural and economic intermingling peculiar to a landscape transformed by colonialism.
