The judges, while recognizing the political nature of the event, pursued it on criminal ground in order to avoid any attempt at justification by the defense and the public at large. He extends his boundaries well beyond Chauri Chaura itself to explore the complex relationship between peasant politics and nationalist discourse and the interplay between memory and history.

Ironically, it was a moment that would have positive repercussions in the long term because, in condemning what had fvent as an aberration, Gandhi demonstrated to his opponents and supporters that his movement was essentially political, not militant.
The author, who was born fifteen miles from Chauri Chaura, brings to his study an empathetic knowledge metapnor the region and a keen ear for the nuances of the culture and language eevent its people. Amin captures the local sights and sounds of Chauri Chaura, with deft use of oral history, and by retaining the original words of those he interviewed. Excellent contribution to the writing of the history of South Asia–Shahid Amin uses oral histories, memory, newspaper accounts, nationalist accounts, and judicial records to examine the events at Chauri Chaura.

I wish I could appreciate the story more, but for the time being, I can only recommend this book to those studying historiography itself.
Taking Gandhi’s statements about civil disobedience to heart, in February residents from the villages around the north Indian market town of Chauri Chaura attacked the local police station, burned it to the ground and murdered twenty-three constables.
Overall, I can see the parallel of the memory of Chauri Chaura to events in my own I feel bad for giving this book only three stars, but my ratings on here are reflective of how good I think a book is and how much I enjoyed it.
As Amin tells us, the name, like so many other things at that time, owed its existence to the cultural and economic intermingling peculiar to a landscape transformed by colonialism.
