April 8, Rating: Viko Nikci as Jerzy. The humor and general good nature of the lil IRA boy surprised me, and I thought it would be a depressing read, but it was the opposite. The reading is rather tedious being excessively wordy. Brendan’s father, Stephen Behan, a house painter who had been active in the Irish War of Independence, read classic literature to the children at bedtime from sources such as Zola, Galsworthy, and Maupassant; his mother, Kathleen, took them on literary tours of the city.

His own life gets progressively easier through the three, and he suffers very little aggression from the other prisoners, perhaps surprising given what he had planned to do. For the reader who’s been to Ireland even once, Behan will manage to make the sweet winds of the Emerald Isle tousle your hair and long to be there, though he inspires this longing from the confines of the British prison system even before The Troubles of the 90s, when Ireland and Britain were still pretty much at war.
Whatever ratings the movie is given the book is not G rated. Sentenced to serve time in England’s Borstal system for young prisoners, he was thrown in amongst the dregs of the British Empire, and found them to be splendid fellows. I don’t imagine that the copy lasted much longer, but you never know.
And reading Borstal Boy made me proud of how he got through it al Hilarious book.
